Whitmore Lake Back to School Guide – 2021-2022

At Whitmore Lake Public Schools, our culture has always been one of collaboration, community and unwavering spirit. We put that to work last year as we were the only school in Washtenaw County to provide five days of in-person instruction for our students. This year will be no different. We will work together to support each other to provide the very best education to the children in Whitmore Lake and the surrounding areas.

The information provided on this page will give you all the tools to start the year off successfully and prepare you to make it another great year to be a Trojan!

COVID-19 Update From Superintendent Tom DeKeyser

COVID Layered Mitigation Strategies

  • Requiring masks on buses for all students and staff. Based on Washtenaw County transmission rating of “substantial,” masks are also required for PreK-6 students and staff while indoors.  Masks are optional but strongly recommended for staff and students in grades 7 – 12.
  • Requiring those who are symptomatic to stay home.
  • Emphasizing the use of hand sanitizer and hygiene products.
  • Maintaining high ventilation rates in all spaces.
  • Changing air filtration frequently.
  • Maintaining custodial protocols similar to those used last year.
  • Cohorting and social distancing as allowed by class schedules.
  • Limiting guests and events with high volumes of people in small spaces.
  • Adhering to all WCHD recommendations and requirements for contact tracing.

You can review our detailed COVID mitigation strategies HERE. I do want to note that currently, our mask policies differ between the two buildings because children under the age of 12 are unable to receive the vaccine at this time. Masking at the Elementary School provides an additional layer of protection for this more vulnerable population of students. Additionally, our approach to contact tracing is based on the WCHD recommendations.  It not only focuses on preventing the spread of COVID-19, but also allows us to keep students without symptoms in school with the assistance of masking and testing as opposed to the traditional 10 day isolation period we were limited to last year.

What worked well last year when dealing with COVID was our interaction and communication with health professionals and finding the right solutions for Whitmore Lake.  I know our plans will have to be adaptable.  We remain committed and equipped to solve whatever problem is put in front of us.  We remain committed to the Whitmore Lake community, and that commitment extends to making 2021/2022 a great year to be a Trojan!
