The WLCR Waves is a competitive recreational swim program in the fall, winter and summer season for ages 5-18. We currently have swimmers form Whitmore Lake, Brighton, Dexter and homeschoolers. The team’s objectives are to use aquatic sports as a vehicle to develop both physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy athletes; to create an environment based on teamwork, sportsmanship, and self-confidence; and provide structured training and discipline to develop swimmers technique and ability. Swimmers participate in 5 dual meets and the championship meet at the end of the season. Parents are expected to attend pre-season meetings and volunteer at hosting meets. Swimmers must provide own transportation to and from practice and meets. Head Coach Ben Newcomb and Assistant Coach Mariah LeRolland Wagner help use their expertise and enthusiasm for swimming and the WL Community to create a fun-filled experience for the swimmers. For more details on the structure of our program, check out the Membership Handbook below.
Coach Ethan swam varsity for 3 years at Wayne Memorial High School where he was a 2-time MISCA qualifier, before swimming at Olivet College. He then began his coaching career with the Dearborn Dolphins in 2016 and later became the Assistant Coach for the Tecumseh Tigersharks, during which time he was also the Head Coach for the Tecumseh Middle School Swim and Dive team when we went on to be #4 in the State. Since 2018, Coach Ethan has been the head coach of the Life Time Fitness in Canton, where coached numerous Junior Olympic and State qualifiers, as well as a few Zone qualifiers. Coach Ethan hopes to share his previous success by combining various different coaching styles to best adapt to each swimmer’s training style, and developing these kids both in and out of the water.
