A Message from Our Director,
Sue Wanamaker

Dear Families and Community Members,

Welcome to Whitmore Lake Public Schools (WLPS) Early Childhood Center (ECC) where it's a fun place to grow and learn for children and a great way for adults to meet other families and be involved in their child’s education!

At the ECC we serve children ages 3 & 4 years old, by December 1st, in no-cost full-day programs and tuition-based full and half-day programs, as well as offering before & after school care.

All programs are licensed by the State of Michigan Office of Early Education Child Care Licensing, except for the ECSE federally funded program, which follows all federal and State requirements. Additionally, all programs follow WLPS and grant program policies and procedures, including background checks, health and safety requirements, child supervision, staff development, and individual instructional programming.

Here at the ECC, we offer all of our programs and services at the elementary school. All programs provide developmentally appropriate activities, a safe and healthy learning environment, a wide variety of materials, supplies, and equipment and age-appropriate indoor and outdoor spaces for children to learn and grow socially, emotionally, and developmentally. Self-help skills, getting along with others, developing fine and gross motor skills, and following directions are all part of the school readiness skills children will learn as they grow with us.

We also offer the following:

  • Early childhood speech pathologist, occupational therapist, and physical therapist located on-site to meet the individual needs of children with IEP’s.

  • Ongoing child assessment tools to build on your child's strengths. These include the Ages and Stages developmental screening tool, the DECA social emotional screening tool, and the High Scope COR assessment tool.
  • Safe outdoor playground with a variety of play equipment to develop children's gross motor and social skills.
  • Indoor areas are available daily to develop those gross motor skills through climbing, riding bikes, playing ball, and a variety of materials to spin, crawl, and jump.
  • Special programs, events, and fun days are scheduled throughout the school year in the classroom and for families in the evening.
  • Developmentally appropriate field trips by bus and walking.
