Back to School Update

Tom DeKeyser, Superintendent

Good Evening,

This week I hosted another Q and A session with parents via Zoom. Attached is a link to that session if you would like to view it in its entirety. (Zoom Q&A)   Many of the questions were associated with the WLPS Virtual Academy.  The questions and responses were added to our FAQ (Updated FAQ).

If you haven’t already done so, please complete our Return to Learn survey sent last Saturday (Survey).  We are using the information to make decisions about staffing the WLPS Virtual Academy.  My goal is to provide all students with as many WLPS teachers as possible.  Accurate survey information is critical as this program is being built.

I am also attaching a link to our Back-to-School Guide HERE.  The Guide is not complete. We are updating it with information as we get it.  However, I feel we should give you something even if we don’t have all the answers right now.

The 2020-2021 Calendar is an example of a document that is not yet in the Guide.  I expect the BOE will approve it at our next meeting.  However, I have been given immediate discretion to modify hours during the first week of school.  As such, please note WLPS will begin on August 31 with half days Monday (8/31) through Thursday (9/3).   Staff will remain on site and will use the afternoons to respond to any issues resulting from starting school during this crisis.  There will be no school on Friday, September 4 or Monday, September 7. We will return to a regular schedule on Tuesday, September 8.

Finally, I am adding another Zoom Q and A on August 19 at 11:00 a.m.  You’ll find a link to that meeting at the end of the updated FAQ.

Thank you for your willingness to be flexible as our staff at WLPS works to prepare for the upcoming school year.  None of us would ever have chosen the circumstances with which we are trying to educate our children in 2020.  We can choose to work together on solutions, though.  I appreciate your feedback and look forward to another week of problem solving.

Sincerely,

Tom DeKeyser

Superintendent
