Counseling: College Information

College Applications
The Counseling Office has applications from various colleges and universities. We encourage seniors to complete these applications as early as possible. Applying early improves the chances of getting into a college of choice. Many colleges offer scholarships and students must be accepted into the college in order to qualify for their scholarships. Usually, scholarship deadlines are as early as October and many end by early Spring.

Students should submit their completed applications, along with a check made out to the college, to either Ms. Kenny or Mrs. Taylor. Ms. Kenny will complete the counselor's section, attach all relevant test scores and a current transcript and mail the application to the college.

Most colleges accept online applications; however, a credit card may be needed to do so. To see if a college accepts online applications, visit their web site.

Scholarships
The Counseling Office has applications for scholarships that are offered by private organizations. These scholarships are non-renewable, which means a student will only receive the amount once. The deadlines for these scholarships vary. We receive new scholarship information on a regular basis. All students are encouraged to use this information.

A great way for students to search for scholarships is through www.fastweb.com This is a free online service that searches for scholarships based on the criteria that the students submits about his/herself.

Financial Aid
Students may obtain aid in 4 different ways:

1. Grants (such as the Pell Grant) - These are generally from the government and usually do not have to be repaid.
2. Scholarships - Provided through colleges and private organizations, most often these do not have to be repaid.
3. Loans - Come from a variety of places and at variety of different interest rates and pay back terms.
4. Work Study -Colleges will find a job for the student to work while they are enrolled at the college.

To fill out a free Financial Aid application (used to determine grant and loan eligibility), or to find out more information regarding financial aid, visit the FAFSA website.
